A week ago I posted about plans by the Copyright Royalty Board to increase royalty rates on Internet music. I also used this site to send an e-mail to my local congresspeople.
Today I got an e-mail from congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo voicing her support for the issue. True, it’s probably just a form letter for this particular issue, but I’ve never written a letter (or e-mail) to a congress person before, so it’s kinda cool to receive a response.
The letter is below. Thanks Congresswoman!
Dear Mr. Damus,
Thank you for contacting me about copyright royalty rates on
webcasters.
We agree with each other and I share your concerns about the
decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) to propose
increased royalty rates for web-based music services. In many
cases the rates the CRB proposed are higher than the total revenue
these services generate and if implemented, could effectively
strangle this fledgling industry.
I will support legislation to overturn the CRB decision and allow
the Board to set a reasonable royalty rate that justly compensates
artists and copyright owners without destroying up-and-coming
webcasting services.
If you have any other questions or comments, let me hear from
you. I always appreciate hearing from my constituents and ask that
you continue to inform me on issues you care about. I need your
thoughts and benefit from your ideas.
If you’d like to receive information on other issues, I’ve created an
e-newsletter to keep constituents informed on a variety of topics.
If you’d like to receive it, go to my website at

Sincerely,
Anna G. Eshoo
Member of Congress
