Ok, I get March Madness, but I really always loved the few weeks in late April and May when there is just a complete playoff overload. You start with a taste of the NHL playoffs, then a week later the NBA playoffs kick in.
This timing is great for fans…but probably not so good for the NHL. I mean, it probably drives down bidding for NHL games when networks know most viewers will be watching the NBA.
Still, this season there have been a ton of great series. Just yesterday all of the west was at 3 games to 2. And so far we have at least 2 series going to a game 7.
The most exciting series so far has been the 8th seed Bruins coming back against the Canadiens to take the series to a game 7. Game 6 was stunning, with SIX goals scored in the last period.
As for the NBA, I’m liking the matchup between the 1st seed Lakers and 8th seed Nuggets. In game 1 there were a combined 142 points scored…Kobe, Iverson, Carmelo and Gasol all scored over 30 points each.
And there are some huge turnarounds this year. The Celtics were last place last year, and this year they’re the #1 seed and one of the favorites for the championship. You also got New Orleans who didn’t make the playoffs last year, but were ranked #2 in the pretty tough Western Conference this year.
I don’t really know a lot about basketball, but I’d put my money on the Celtics. I’m also pretty certain the Cavs have another solid playoff run in them…but really, I don’t see any team that can get past Boston in a 7 game series.
In the West there are so many teams with such similar records it’s hard to tell who’s gonna pull ahead. All I know is Houston isn’t looking good, and neither is Dallas.
Anyway, if there is ever a reason to get a HDTV it’s late april madness. Forget the super bowl…we’re gonna have killer games almost every night for about a month.
