God bless Miley

Published by japadamus under Bob Loblaw

Miley Cyrus

Remember on September 11th, when you woke up and all hell had broken loose?

Well, this is the opposite of that.

I woke up this morning, put up Drudge, and what do I see?  Miley Cyrus posing nude for Vanity Fair?!  Sweet.

I mean, from an artistic standpoint, of course.

But really, sure she’s 15, but her performance on American Idol, humping the stage…I mean, after that you have to appreciate at the very least her…uh…talents.

Check out the shoot here.  I believe I called Miley posing nude a while back, but I would have never guessed it would be before she turned 18.

#186

Published by japadamus under news

Remember last year when Colt Brennan was deciding whether to return for his senior year at UH?  He was expected to be drafted in the first round and would surely command a multi-million dollar contract.

But he stayed.

Probably not a great move in retrospect.  Brennan was drafted in the 6th round today, 186th overall by the Washington Redskins.

Brennan’s value took  a hit after UH got hammered by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.  Then he had hip surgery that may put him on the PUP list next year.

At this point, Brennan was lucky to be drafted at all.  He will be deep in the depth chart, if he even makes the roster.

The biggest difference between this year and last is that as a first round pick Brennan would have been given several years to develop.  As a sixth round pick, it’s pretty easy to just cut him.

This puts the final touches on a heartbreaking season for the Warriors.  They lost their number 1 QB and coach and suffered a humiliating defeat in New Orleans.

Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Brennan does in the NFL.  Gotta feel for the guy.  He’s a great QB…in any system…and I hope he is able to secure role in the NFL.

iPhone v2?

Published by japadamus under news

There has been much speculation that Apple is gonna roll out a 3G iPhone sometime this year…say around July.

Engadget is reporting that the next iPhone will have a black back, and will have GPS and a normal-sized headphone jack in addition to 3G data.

Guesses are the device will ship in July.

Who knows how accurate this info is…but this pic at least looks pretty legit.

I can’t wait.

2nd Round

Published by japadamus under news

The second round of the NHL playoffs started today.  You have both 1st and 2nd seeds in there, although both third and fourth seeds have fallen.

The series of the 2nd round will be the Red Wings vs Avalanche.  I mean, this is a classic NHL matchup.  And you have classic players as well.  Sakic, Forsberg, Lidstrom, Draper, Maltby, Hejduk…even Osgood is back in the mix.

You can’t get much better than that.

In the east, you got the Penguins looking good, along with the Canadiens.  The Rangers have been surprisingly good…but they don’t stand a chance against the superstar Pens.

This is exactly what the NHL needed…great matchups, superstars.  You gotta love playoff hockey.

This election is confusing, frustrating.

Published by japadamus under news, Bob Loblaw

So, Hillary won Pennsylvania by 10%, right.  But the NY Times says she only picked up 1 delegate.  Who knows how that works.

Ok, so Obama leads Hillary by 148 delegates, right?  Not so fast.  Hillary is saying she’s ahead.  Sure, she’ll need to count two states that were not supposed to be counted in the first place.  And that Hillary didn’t really care about until she saw her lead slip away.

Then you have Daily KOS saying that Obama needs only 43 additional superdelegates to clinch.

Sigh…this shit makes we wish I was still looking at TJFKAK’s cute cat pictures.

But really, as much as dems bitch about Bush stealing Florida and hanging chads or what not, they really managed to fuck this one up.

The whole delegate/super delegate thing is ridiculous.  With about 500 of these superdelegates, some of which are like 20 year old kids, there is really no way there will be a winner until the democratic primary.

That’s gay.

In the meantime Obama’s double digit lead over McCain has disappeared.  And as Hillary and Obama swipe at each other over the next few months it’s likely that by the time the general election comes the democratic nominee will be lucky to be ahead of Nader, much less McCain.

Oh well.  At least the playoffs are on now.

Artie is back

Published by japadamus under news

This morning Artie returned to the Stern show.  I haven’t heard the show yet, but according to Marksfriggin.com Artie apologized, talked a bit about his amsterdam trip, and even appeared with Teddy on air.

This made my day….and it’s only 8am here on the west coast.

Oh yeah, and Riley Martin is back for another 6 months as well.

Is Artie Back?

Published by sushiattack under Howard Stern

Its 6 hours and counting until the Howard Stern show comes back from vacation.  As you may recall from Japa’s previous posting Artie Lange decided to unceremoniously quit from the show amidst a fight with his assistant Teddy.

I’ve been a Stern fan for a number of years and its always been apparent that Howard is the perennial professional. I don’t see how he can allow Artie to remain on the show while he abuses the staff, falls asleep on the show and generally doesn’t care about being there.  Artie has been getting worst and worst on the show, he barely talks and he seems to just not care about the day to day.  Its like he’s touring at a frantic pace to gather cash quickly for some end.  What is it?

I hope Artie comes back but if he’s going to be an asshole all the time and not contribute to the show he’s gotta go.

Late April…madness

Published by japadamus under Bob Loblaw

Ok, I get March Madness, but I really always loved the few weeks in late April and May when there is just a complete playoff overload.  You start with a taste of the NHL playoffs, then a week later the NBA playoffs kick in.

This timing is great for fans…but probably not so good for the NHL.  I mean, it probably drives down bidding for NHL games when networks know most viewers will be watching the NBA.

Still, this season there have been a ton of great series.  Just yesterday all of the west was at 3 games to 2.  And so far we have at least 2 series going to a game 7.

The most exciting series so far has been the 8th seed Bruins coming back against the Canadiens to take the series to a game 7.  Game 6 was stunning, with SIX goals scored in the last period.

As for the NBA, I’m liking the matchup between the 1st seed Lakers and 8th seed Nuggets.  In game 1 there were a combined 142 points scored…Kobe, Iverson, Carmelo and Gasol all scored over 30 points each.

And there are some huge turnarounds this year.  The Celtics were last place last year, and this year they’re the #1 seed and one of the favorites for the championship.  You also got New Orleans who didn’t make the playoffs last year, but were ranked #2 in the pretty tough Western Conference this year.

I don’t really know a lot about basketball, but I’d put my money on the Celtics.  I’m also pretty certain the Cavs have another solid playoff run in them…but really, I don’t see any team that can get past Boston in a 7 game series.

In the West there are so many teams with such similar records it’s hard to tell who’s gonna pull ahead.  All I know is Houston isn’t looking good, and neither is Dallas.

Anyway, if there is ever a reason to get a HDTV it’s late april madness.  Forget the super bowl…we’re gonna have killer games almost every night for about a month.

‘Naked’ iPhone Case

Published by japadamus under news

From Uncrate.  Sure, the iPhone looks a’ight.  But most of the time the device is hidden under a case…which undoubtedly doesn’t look as good as the iPhone itself.

Enter the Naked Case for the iPhone (iPod Touch models also available).  It’s made by some company you’ve never heard of…but regardless, it focuses on preserving the look and form factor of the iPhone while protecting the device.

First, the screen is protected by an ‘electrostatic membrane’ which supposedly protects the screen while allowing your finger swipes to be registered by the device.

The rest of the device is surrounded by clear plastic that doesn’t even look like it’s there.

Seems like a good idea.  I have a big case for my iPhone that hides pretty much the whole device.  It really would be nice to see the thing once in a while.

Check out the case here.

All sports online

Published by japadamus under best of the internet

So as mentioned previously, it’s NHL playoff time.  And NBA playoffs are just a few days away.

But locally you probably only see a few games.  And a lot of these games are on while you’re at work.

Enter the best website of all time.

Channelsurfing.net allows you to watch pretty much any US professional sports game, NCAA football, baseball…even cricket, rugby and soccer.  All you need is a decent web connection and a computer and it’s yours.

The quality is surprisingly good.  The resolution is above average and the frame rate is good enough for most sports.

The only problem I’ve encountered is a disconnection here or there, but that is easily solved with a browser refresh.

I’m not really sure how this site works…but it does.  I can’t wait until football season when I have every single game on at the same time.

Check it out.

NHL Playoff Goodness

Published by japadamus under hockey

Let’s be honest…in the NHL 8 out of 15 teams in each conference make the play offs.  So, most of the regular season doesn’t really make a difference.

But the playoffs are wonderful.

This is the first season where I’ve had an HD TV and a HD Cable, and trust me, hockey in HD makes all this crap worthwhile.  The detail is amazing…and yes, it makes it easier to see the puck as well.  Weird thing tho, not all teams have HD cameras installed.  Like the Flames…no HD.  But for the most part the added detail of HD is incredible.

Picks for this year?  I have to go with Pittsburgh and Detroit in the Stanley Cup…mostly because this matchup would be unbelievably awesome.  You have the veteran Wings against kids like Crosby and Malkin.

I have to say the Rangers are looking good too, and the Habs are doing well against an easy matchup.  Surprisingly Dallas is up 2-0 against the defending champs the Ducks…but really Dallas won’t go past the second round.

And Calgary is giving the Sharks a tough time.  Yesterday they came back from a 0-3 deficit to win.

The point is, playoffs are pure goodness.  And even better in HD.

Go Wings!

Artie update

Published by japadamus under news

According to the New York Post, Artie was spotted boarding a flight to Amsterdam with other members of the Stern crew.  This trip is a bachelor party for Jason, one of the workers on the Stern show, and was planned months in advance.

Apparently Artie made eye contact with his assistant Teddy, but kept his distance.

No new yet on whether Artie will ever return to the Stern show.

Artie quits?

Published by japadamus under news

Just yesterday I blogged about how hilarious it was to listen to Artie Lange sleep on the Howard Stern Show on Wednesday.  On Thursday things turned around completely…and at the end of the day Artie had quit the show.

Without going too deep into details, the whole incident started when Artie got into a fight with his assistant, Teddy, off-air.  Howard then brought this fight into the studio and kind of fanned the fire.  Eventually, Artie got so mad that he threw stuff at Teddy and made an attempt to attack him.  Artie didn’t actually hit Teddy, but he had to be restrained by several people to avoid an all-out fist fight.

At the end of the fight, Artie said he had to quit the show, apologized to Howard and left.  So far there is no news about whether Artie plans to quit the show for good.

If you’re a fan of the show you know Artie has had his problems…heroin, coke, alcohol and gambling.  He’s gained tons of weight over the past few years and, as I mentioned yesterday, frequently falls asleep on the show.  More than that though, he’s one of those people that despite success seems to be headed towards an extremely ugly breakdown…and perhaps this is what happened yesterday.

It’s sad though…listening to the whole incident was very depressing and bummed me out for the day.  I mean, I listen to the show for five hours a day, four days a week - I don’t talk to most people I know that much.  And over time you get to feel pretty close to the show’s characters…and Artie was one of my favorites.  We even went to see him live in Vegas.

The Stern show is off next week, so we’ll have to wait a while before we know what is going on with Artie, and if he’ll be back.  At this point I can’t really imagine the show without him.  Hopefully he’ll get his head straight and return next monday.

Artie Sleeps

Published by japadamus under Bob Loblaw

It’s hard to imagine that listening to someone sleep on the radio could be entertaining.  But that is the brilliance of the Howard Stern show.

Yesterday, over an hour of the show was devoted to one of the cast members, Artie Lange, sleeping.  And on the radio of course, you can’t see anything…all you can do is listen to the guy snore.

And sadly, it was hilarious.

Not only that, but afterwards I came home and watched it on Howard TV on Demand.  And that was just as funny.

It’s hard to explain, really…I mean, sometimes the show will be super funny, and other times it will be absolutely infuriating.  But I love listening.  Buy Sirius, people (or download the shows online).

Feel sorry for Tibet? Try to steal the Olympic torch.

Published by japadamus under news

So this is the deal.  Chinese people do fucked up things to tibet.  People feel sorry for Tibet.  People try to steal the olympic torch as it’s being run around the world on its way to the 2008 Beijing Olymics.

Really?

Now look, I’ll admit I don’t know anything really about Tibet.  But I get why people feel sorry for these people…the dali lama looks like such a nice guy…you gotta feel bad for him.

But try as I might, I can’t get myself to care.  I mean, I know Tibet is going through a lot right now, but did they have to make such a big deal out of this right in the middle of the American Idol top 10?  We’re not talking about the open auditions here…these people will be on the National American Idol Tour!

Not only that, but with NHL and NBA playoffs coming up, I won’t even be able to Wikipedia Tibet for another 3 months at least.  And really, most likely my research will just be watching the Brad Pitt tibet movie on demand.

Sometimes I think it’s sad that I’m such an ignorant asshole.  But then I watch the news and see people hanging off the Golden Gate bridge with big ‘Free Tibet’ signs, and realize that they’re the assholes.

But at the end of the day, even though I don’t really get why these people want to fuck with the torch so badly, I love all of this.  It’s like a real life game of capture the flag.

Kudos for the guy with the fire extinguisher…EXCELLENT idea.  I would have gone with a super soaker myself.  You know, for the range.  But hey, fire extinguisher works too.

It’s funny though…I think of all these free tibet activists scheming, “we’re going to try to grab the torch.”  Then on the other side of the world there are a bunch of sour-faced old chinese guys shaking their heads, “they’re trying to grab our torch.”  Classic.
