Drive + Play 2 - iPod in your car
It amazes me that even today it’s so hard to get an iPod to operate in your car. I got my last car in 2005 and there was no aux input or anything…let alone an iPod connector.
This is where the Drive + Play 2 comes in. I just got one of these, and it’s great. It’s the best third party iPod solution I’ve seen so far. And it’s much better than many factory integrated iPod systems.
The Drive + Play 2 has 3 components, a large color screen, a cigarette adapter, and a control knob. The color screen is great. It’s bright and colorful and overall looks very nice. You can place this wherever you want, but it works best right in the middle of the dashboard so you can view it without taking your eyes off the road.
You can also place the control knob wherever you want. I placed mine on the center console.
Finally, you use the cigarette adapter to power the system and connect your iPod. You can also connect directly to your car battery.
As far as audio inputs go, you can use a direct aux input if your car supports that, plug into the antenna jack, or transmit via FM.
The great thing about Drive + Play 2 is that it works seamlessly with your iPod. The menu system and control knob are easy to get used to and way, way better than trying to stare at the small iPod screen.
Also, the system allows you to hide your iPod in the glove box or armrest so you don’t even need to take it out. You can also plug in a USB key or other USB powered MP3 player.
So far the only problem I see is that the screen isn’t easily removable, and since it looks so nice I can see it attracting mexicans that will break your window thinking it’s a GPS. You also have to take some time to hide the cords. The knob is wireless, but the screen requires a wire. I’m gonna try to hide this under my dash and center console, which seems like a pretty simple operation.
As for performance, the only problem I have is that the system doesn’t pick up from where you left off. I actually don’t really know how this works, but it seems like if your car is off for a long time it just totally forgets where you were.
But overall, this thing is so slick and I love it. It is a bit pricey at around $300, but I got a used one on ebay for $200.
It’s great when you have a 80GB iPod packed with songs and you don’t even need to take it out. And the system looks good, unlike those fat FM transmitters.
If you’re a big iPod user, check this one out. It’s worth the money.
