Japa gets a neti pot
Ever heard of nasal irrigation? It involves running salt water through one nostril and out the other with the help of a special pot called a neti pot.
For a long time I was convinced that this was just another one of those useless, pseudoscientific hippie rituals like Burning Man, or recycling. But yesterday I read this article in the NY Times that confirms that there are actually some benefits to using a neti pot.
Ever since I moved away from Hawaii my allergies have been a pain in the ass – especially as summer rolls around. But according to the Times, the use of a neti pot can help to reduce allergy symptoms, so tonite I decided to give it a try.
I picked up a small neti pot at walgreens. It’s nothing fancy, just a blue plastic tea pot-looking thing that comes with a bunch of salt packets. It cost only $15 or so, and once the salt packets run out you can refill it with just regular salt.
Using the neti pot is easy enough. You fill the pot with warm water and sprinkle in a salt packet. Then you put the spout of the neti pot in one nostril while tilting your head to the side. The water seeps through your top nostril and flows out the other. After a few minutes of that you switch nostrils, tilt your head the other way and start again.
The feeling of having water flowing in your nostril is disconcerting. It kind of gives you a feeling like drowning. Plus, the first time I used it my nostril was all backed up so it took a while for the water to seep through to the other nostril.
It feels nice, actually. And afterwards my nostrils did feel clearer. The only problem is that some of the neti salt solution seeps into you mouth, so you have this kind of salty taste in your mouth which is disgusting – especially because you know this water contains all the shit that was stuck in your nostril.
Below is a video that shows how the neti works. It looks pretty horrible to see someone use a neti pot – I mean, it seems like everyone just has a blank expression on their face while holding the pot with one hand while a stream of water flows from the other nostril.
In any case, I’ve only used it once, so I guess it will take some time to see how it works long term, but so far…not bad.
