It’s sad when the Lions’ winning a game against the Redskins is one of the top stories of the week. Thankfully Favre pulled out a huge game winner, or else we’d be hearing about the Lions all week.
-And how about Favre? He still didn’t look like the Favre of old, but he sure loves to play football. He was running up the field to throw blocks for Peterson, while throwing for a respectable 300 yards and 2 TDs. And of course, he won the game with a 32 yard TD pass with 2 seconds left. That’s why you can’t really hold it against Favre for having such a hard time retiring. 1) He still can play in the NFL, and 2) He puts in as much effort as anyone else.
-There are still 7 unbeaten teams in the NFL. Most surprisingly, the Denver Broncos are one of them. They won on a fluke in week 1, then had 2 gimmies against the Browns and Raiders. It’ll be interesting to see how they do in their next 5 games against the Cowboys, Pats, Chargers, Ravens and Steelers. I’m guessing by week 9 their record will be 3-5.
-It’s nice to see that Tom Brady is still sorta like the Brady of old. He lit up the Falcons for 277 yards and a TD – not incredible numbers by any stretch, but the Falcons are a tough team and he played well.
-The Bengals are 2-1, and one fluke play away from being 3-0, after beating the Steelers. Carson Palmer pulled off his own game winning drive, throwing the game winning TD with 14 seconds left. The Bengals scored their only offensive TDs in the fourth quarter, coming back from what looked like a pretty insurmountable 20-9 deficit.
-The Bears looked bad early, trailing the Seneca Wallace-power Seahawks 13-0 in the 2nd quarter. But surprisingly, Jay Cutler kept them in the game, throwing 3 TDs, including a 4th quarter game winner with 1:52 left. Cutler bounced back from an early interception, and ended the game going 21-27 for 247 yards – not bad at all.
-Michael Vick returned to football, but didn’t do much. He was 0-2, with 7 yards rushing. I didn’t see the game, but apparently he was used primarily as a decoy. Either way, the game wasn’t close, with the Eagles winning 34-14.
-The competition for worst team in the league so far is tight between the Rams, Browns and Redskins. I think the Skins get bumped to the top of this list for week 3 after losing to the Lions. But really, the Rams, who have averaged only 8 points per game look the worst overall. Plus, that 8 points per game is buoyed by the 14 points that Kyle Boller threw for this week.
-And you can’t forget the Raiders, who can’t even get enough people to their game to avoid a blackout. Simply, JaMarcus Russel should not be an NFL quarterback. He has completed an average of 10 passes per game for about 135 yards. He has 4 INTs and only 1 TD in 3 games, including 2 INTs in yesterday’s game where he tossed for…wait for it…61 yards. Look, I know he was the #1 pick, but so was Alex Smith. It’ll be interesting to see how long the Raiders are willing to waste what is a pretty good defensive team on a QB experiment that should have ended a year ago.
