Youtube, Britney, Tampon

Britney has had her share of problems. And here’s another one: Footage from her concert in Anaheim shows what appears to be a tampon string hanging between Spears’ enormous thighs.

I’ve embedded a couple youtube videos below – decide for yourself. There is clearly a white dangling string…but is it a tampon string? Now, I don’t really have a good idea of what a tampon string looks like, but the string in the video seems to be pretty thick. It is more linguine than angel hair, which makes me think it may be a stray lace or lining from her costume.

At the same time though, it is kind of odd to have a string there. I can’t really imagine how it got there.

And one more thing, I’ve never seen a live Britney concert, but she doesn’t really seem to dance very well. In the clip she’s just kind of waddling around the stage. I mean, I’m not a good dancer or anything, but she just looks all bloated and uncomfortable – that can’t be good, right?

Little asian kid can beatbox well

I don’t really get beatboxing. I mean, you really are just reproducing an electronic noise, right? So why not just let the machine do it and save yourself the trouble? It’s like washing a car by hand when you can just take the thing to a carwash.

In any case, the video below is of a kid who’s really good at beatboxing. He’s just some little asian kid that looks real unassuming, but I have to admit he does have a skill here.

I’m just not sure how valuable this skill is. I mean, you know his parents wanted him to play piano or violin or something - like all asian parents do. But instead he spends his time on this?

Actually, I guess it panned out well for him because it’s unlikely that his video would get this popular if he was just playing the piano.

Watch any train wrecks lately?

So I just stumbled upon one of the most sad, depressing but strangly interesting websites. Its called Fuck My Life where people gripe about something bad that has happened and people vote as to whether the griper shares any blame for the result. Some examples:

Today, my girlfriend dumped me proclaiming she wanted someone more like her “Edward”. I asked her who Edward was. She held up a copy her “Twilight” book. She was talking about a fictional vampire. FML

Today, I found out that I am 14 weeks pregnant. The father of the baby is now engaged to my best friend, whom he was cheating on me with when I became pregnant. I’m going to be the maid of honor, 8 months pregnant with his child, at their wedding. FML

The Stern Show tweets

I’ve noticed that people are very divided about Twitter. A lot of people can’t live without it, but other people just have an unexplainable hatred for the service and its users. Most people though have no idea what it is, or how it works, or why someone would use it.

I mean, I get people following celebrities. Judging by how many stalkers they are out there and how many of those mags sell at the supermarket checkout line, it makes sense that there would be a big contingent of celebrity tweet followers out there. One thing I don’t get though is normal people tweeting about normal things. Like, you can have access to these people all the time and they’re not famous or anything. Who really cares what they’re doing.

This week the Howard Stern show joined Twitter after what seems to be much debate among the show’s staff. Howard has been mentioning it here and there, mostly with detached amusement. But I guess the show’s executives have been really pushing Howard to embrace alternative forms of media, so on April 9 the show posted its first tweet.

I have to say, most of the tweets are pretty boring. ‘Playing the Gossip Game,’ and ‘Robin is doing the news’ is not something I’d go out of my way to read. But it was interesting how Howard posted a video of his dog at the park. I mean, it wasn’t really interesting except that it was Howard’s dog - and I guess that’s the celebrity aspect of twitter kicking in.

I think the most challenging part of twitter is keeping up with it. It’s helpful that there are so many applications for the iPhone and Blackberry for twitter, but really, if you’re doing something exciting do you really want to be fiddling around with your phone.

A better question for twitter is how are they going to make any money off of the service. Even though the posts are relatively small, the company still needs to store and maintain a massive volume of data which will just get bigger and bigger. They don’t really have ads so far, and they don’t charge for most users.

There have been rumors that Google was in talks to buy twitter for a $1 billion ballpark, but who knows if that’s accurate. True, today twitter is a valuable web commodity, but it’s not yet apparent if the service will burn out like Friendster, or keep growing like Facebook.

One thing twitter does have, though, is the unique ability to quickly understand trends and events as they happen. I’d imagine that this data is valuable to someone like Google, who really just wants to serve up better, more accurate ads. And, with more tweeting from mobile devices you can get data about the location of people - that’s golden for local ads.

In any case, you can follow Stern on twitter by adding the user ’sternshow.’ The show is on vacation this week so there are not a lot of tweets up there yet, but check back next week.

Japan Finance minister quits over drunkeness

Like any good Japa knows, being drunk is one of the lovely things about being a Japanese businessman. Waundering the streets, slurring words and falling down is a birth rite.

Today, the Japanese finance chief resigned over being drunk. He tried to play it off on cough medicine and jet lag, but it looks like his friends called him out. Oh well.

Disturbing truths in Google Searches

You may have noticed that Google now has an auto-complete function in their main search service that shows frequently asked questions as you type. For example, if you type “how much is my car,” google will provide a list of most frequently searched terms that start with “how much is my car", like “how much is my car worth", “how much is my car registration,” etc.

Helpful, right? Not only that but google shows how many results are available for that particular question.

Hilarity ensues on some questions though. Check out the pic above for the question “why do I have.”

Gizmodo has a good article on this that shows several hilarious search strings. It makes you really question what’s on the internet…and what people are searching for.

So I found a site that focuses on stuff white people like. Today’s installment focuses on the concept of the “unpaid internship.”

Its true, white people love to have the exciting internship to waive around to all their other snooty friends. Fortunately most of the people that seek out the unpaid internship usually have the money to afford not to work in the first place. Its like the millionaire college professor that continues to teach because they love students.

Rouxbe for all you top chef wannabe’s

The internet is a great resource for recipes and cooking tips. For the most part though all you get is a list of ingredients and cooking instructions…you don’t learn all the tips that a real chef would know.

To really learn, you need video. Enter Rouxbe. Sure, you can TiVo the entire food network, but that’s information overload. Why not just watch the cooking videos that you’re interested in.

It’s a great idea and I’m surprised someone hasn’t done this yet. Not only that, but Rouxbe doesn’t give you low quality YouTube-like videos – you get high quality video with excellent instructions. There are even separate volume controls for the narrator and the background porno music (here’s a tip, turn the music off).

The recipes on Rouxbe really run the gamut…meats, seafood, pasta, even homemade french fries. And Rouxbe certifies that recipes themselves so you’re not stuck with poor instructions or crappy food.

You have the option of watching a quick recap or detailed instructions. The detailed instructions really teach you everything you need to know…like using a fork to whisk eggs so there’s not too much air, for example.

There are also videos on cooking basics, like cutting an onion. These are super helpful because they are linked within other recipes so you can access them quickly while you’re viewing other, more intricate videos. Rouxbe calls these ‘Cooking School’, and they really provide you with a great background in basic cooking that you wouldn’t otherwise find if you were, say, reading a recipe.

I’m totally blow away by Rouxbe. It’s comprehensive, incredibly well done, and amazingly helpful. I’d suggest watching a few recipes before you leave work and picking up your ingredients on the way home.

Definitely check this one out.

Black Friday

Thanksgiving is wonderful. First of all – lots of food. Secondly, you don’t have all of that present giving bullshit that makes christmas so expensive.

And the best part of thanksgiving? Black Friday.

Now, in the past you had to do the retarded wait in line in the freezing cold at 3am thing. But that’s not the case anymore. Lots of Black Friday deals are online either today, or at 12am this morning when Black Friday officially kicks in. So far, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Dell and OfficeMax have a bunch of Black Friday deals available.

There are also a bunch of Black Friday sites that list known deals. Lots of retailers published their deals early this year. A few good sites:

Auctions meet gambling

I came across Swoopo the other day. It’s an interesting concept. Instead of having a single winning bidder pay for a product, why not have every bidder pay a little, while the winning bidder pays the difference. Make sense?

It’s a bit difficult to explain, but this site is really quite fascinating. Here’s how it works. Users bid on products listed on the swoopo website. The winning bidder at the time the auction ends is the winner. But get this – each bid costs around a dollar. Not only that, but each bid increases the time of the auction by 15 seconds. Finally, each bid increases the price of the auction by 15 cents.

The end result is that you get great deals on products. I’ve seen MacBooks sell for $300 and Wiis sell for less than $100. The downside, however, is that it’s very hard to win an auction. You’re competing with many others to win, and since each bid costs $1, this could get expensive.

It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also very frustrating. And, if you don’t bid well you may even end up paying more for a product. I saw a $500 netbook sell for $420 today. But, to win the winning bidder put in 160 bids, meaning he spent roughly $580 for a $500 product. Not a great deal. But I’ve also see PS3s go for $60, so you gotta pick your auction.

To start, you need to buy credits. 30 credits cost $20 – and each bid costs a credit.

Take a look. The size is fun to play around with…as long as you don’t spend too much on bids. And, it’s very competitive…you’ll find yourself in back and forth wars with other bidders quite often.
