iPhone users know that the Apple App Store is a huge differentiator for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  The only problem?  Like everything else in the Apple ecosystem, Apple wields waaaay too much control over iPhone apps.  The company can reject apps at their whim and more importantly they don’t provide a reason for doing so, making it difficult for developers to create apps that will be approved.  Apple also rejects apps that duplicate either current or planned Apple functionality.

This is bad.  A good example is the Starplayr app that plays Sirius XM radio over 3G.  This app was rejected from the app store for no apparent reason, forcing the company to fold.

Well, the Apple jailbreak community has created their own iPhone app store called Cydia.  Like all unsponsored iPhone apps, this one will require you to jailbreak your iPhone, but it will open up your iPhone to a ton of new apps.

Some of the better apps released so far include a video camera, an app that makes your phone into a wireless modem, and an app that adds…wait for it…copy and paste.  Cydia plans to structure their app store like Apple’s app store, so developers can create and sell their apps – with no restrictions.  Among other things, this means “adult themed apps.”  I’m not sure what that means, but it sounds really, really good.

A detailed guide to jailbreaking is here.  I did it last night, and it was easy and clicking on a few buttons.  It also just took a few minutes.  And Apple’s backup functionality makes it nearly impossible to ‘brick’ your iphone.  I’d suggest it for all.  Not only do you get a ton of new apps, you also get to stick it to Apple, and hopefully encourage the company to be more transparent with their app approval process.
